The NDSG carries out all its programmes through its Commission, enumerated below…
Information & Communication Technology Commission:
This commission oversees all IT components of NDSG to enhance the democratic system. It provides infrastructure for automation, governance for network and operating systems, and supports operational units with necessary functionality. The commission leads in building capacities and innovative strategies in Information Technology for key democratic institutions and processes.
Economic & Policy Commission:
As one of NDSG’s most strategic commissions, it is responsible for coordination, policy dialogue, and recommendations on social, economic, political, and environmental issues. The commission implements internationally agreed development goals, conducting research, and advising state agencies on strategic policy adjustments and directions.
Lobby Commission:
This commission provides essential services to influence political decisions in the Executive and legislative branches. Working with NDSG, nonprofits, and other organizations, it voices concerns to the parliament about legislation, government policies, and programs. The Lobby Commission engages in advocating for the implementation of various NDSG conference and summit outcomes and resolutions.
Youth Commission:
The NDSG Youth Commission leads in Nigeria’s youth welfare and development. It brings together the expertise, ideas, and experience of young people and the democratic community to build a reform agenda for youth development. The commission runs programs through its domiciliary organization, the Voting Youth.
Women Commission:
The NDSG Women Commission envisions a secure and empowered Nigerian woman contributing equally in all walks of life. It promotes the equitable status and well-being of Nigerian women, reviewing and providing solutions to critical areas affecting women. The Women’s Commission operates through its domiciliary organization, Voting Women.
Defense and Security Commission:
This commission collaborates with state and non-state stakeholders, providing advisory and technical support for defense and security agencies. It conducts research and development for a solution-based approach to Nigeria’s defense and security policy, addressing cross-border and cross-sectoral threats.
Commission for Monitoring and Evaluation:
This commission establishes institutional frameworks allowing officers and sector stakeholders to assess government programs and procedures constitutionally. It focuses on monitoring the evolution of government policies and programs, evaluating their effectiveness, and determining the impact on public-driven programs, projects, or interventions.
Parties & Election Commission:
The Parties and Election Commission play a crucial role in capacity building and institutional development for political parties, civil societies, and related state institutions. It collaborates with political parties to enhance capacity, promote good governance, and prioritize internal democracy within parties for the effective growth of Nigeria’s party system. In its electioneering engagement, the commission works across state and non-state institutions to deploy and train non-partisan volunteers for election observation. Additionally, it conducts innovative voter education programs and establishes measures to mitigate election violence, providing post-election reports.
Commission for International Relations:
The fundamental purpose of the Commission for International Relations is to review existing policies, conduct research, and make comprehensive foreign policy suggestions. It works to build capacity and promote initiatives for diplomatic institutional objectives and impact. The commission collaborates with state and non-state actors to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and the interests of its citizens globally.
Commission for Inter-Governmental Affairs:
The institutional goal of the NDSG Commission for Intergovernmental Affairs is to foster cordial relationships among the three government tiers: Federal, State, and Local. It aims to accelerate the achievement of a self-reliant economy and promote the tenets of true federalism. Functioning as an independent, bipartisan intergovernmental advisory center, its mission is to strengthen the Nigerian federal system and enhance the ability of federal, state, and local governments to work cooperatively, efficiently, and effectively.
Parliamentary Commission:
The NDSG parliamentary commissions coordinate and provide secretariat support for the NDSG Congress from Area Council, State to Federal levels. They work to advance the effectiveness, independence, and integrity of legislatures, fostering interstate cooperation and facilitating information exchange. Another objective is to improve the operations and management of state legislatures and the effectiveness of legislators and legislative staff. The parliamentary commission also encourages activities promoting high standards of conduct among legislators and legislative staff.
Judicial Commission:
The NDSG Judicial Commission collaborates with stakeholders to independently oversee the processes and outcomes of the Nigerian judicial system. It pursues initiatives for the growth and development of the judicial system, providing a platform for a transparent complaint process to uphold public confidence in Nigerian courts. Among its mandates, the commission can investigate complaints about the behavior or capacity of judicial officers and entertain complaints from members of the public or legal professionals.
Commission for Affiliate Institutions:
This commission administers and coordinates affiliate institutions such as the African Legislative Exchange Council, Nigeria Legislative Exchange Council, Constitutional Society of Nigeria, African Legislative Institute, Nigeria Citizen Centre, Nigeria Democracy Fund, etc. Its mandate includes providing institutional feedback from both NDSG and affiliate institutions.
